University of Hawaii at Manoa


The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a public co-educational research university, and the flagship campus of the greater University of Hawaii system. It is located in Manoa, an affluent neighborhood of Honolulu, which is approximately one mile away from Ala Moana and Waikiki.

Students from across the nation and the whole world choose this University, mainly because of UH of Manoa's unique research opportunities. The University of Hawaii at Manoa was founded in 1907 as a land grant college of agriculture and mechanical arts. In 1912 it was renamed the College of Hawaii and moved to its present location. William Kwai Fong Yap petitioned the territorial legislature six years later for university status which led to another renaming to the University of Hawai'i in 1920. This is also the founding year of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1931 the Territorial Normal and Training School was absorbed into the university. It is now the College of Education.

Today, it is one of the 32 institutions nationwide which hold the distinction of being a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant research institutions. It is ranked in the top 30 public universities in federal research funding for engineering and science. It is a pioneer in research in fields such as oceanography, astronomy, cancer research and genetics.

The university is a top public research university and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is known for its academics, athletics and community involvement. The college offers more than 200 degree programs. Programs in the fields of Astronomy, Oceanography, Earth Science are ranked among the nation's best.

UHM has an average class size of 25. Students can choose between 9 different Schools and 9 different Colleges. The School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology received the largest amount of funding among the Manoa units.

The University offers Bachelor's degrees in 92 fields, Master's degrees in 84 fields, Doctoral degrees in 51 fields and Professional degrees in 3 fields.

There are over 200 student organizations at University of Hawaii at Manoa. These organizations cover a range of career interests, academic topics, recreational activities and lifestyles.

The University's student life can offer exciting opportunities for students to establish lifelong friendships and make memories they will not forget. The on-campus food and housing options allow students to stay fit and have fun. The campus offers opportunities for recreation, including intramural and Division I varsity sports, media opportunities, internships and employment, as well as study abroad programs.

All UH Manoa residence halls are coeducational. The residence halls include the units of the Mauka/Makai Complex and the Hale Aloha Complex. First year undergraduates are required to live in the residence halls.

The two apartment-style units are Hale Noelani and Hale Wainani. Hale Noelani consists of five three-story buildings. Second year undergraduates and above are permitted to live in Hale Noelani. Alcohol is not allowed in Hale Noelani.

Hale Wainani has two high rise buildings and two low rise buildings. Upperclassman undergraduates live in these units. The university also reserves some of the low rise units for graduate student housing and family student housing.
